Thinking about the Literature PBAT - First Meeting - Tuesday 6/6 - Time TBD

At the last moderation study, one of the teachers asked, What is the purpose of the literature PBAT? To ensure students developed the stamina and fluency for reading substantial works of fiction? Or to ensure they have developed strong analytical skills?

Actually, both.

Example 1: A couple of schools have deepened the lit PBAT experience by having two phases:

First, the student writes an analytic paper on a work of fiction. Second, both the student and an external evaluator reads an additional work of fiction and then meet to discuss and analyze it.

Example 2: In a recent presentation, a student wrote a paper on two short stories (from an author’s collection) and then met with external evaluators who also read both stories. As with the above example, the experience was an enriching one for student and evaluator, and an excellent way to ensure “deeper learning.”

Knowing how much the PBAT experience was improved as a result, it is fitting that we consider these and other ideas for rethinking how we approach the Literature PBAT.

Please join the group, brainstorm, listen to the proposals, and think about next steps. Email phyllis@performanceassessment.org to RSVP for the first meeting. We expect this work to continue through the summer and fall.
