Professional Development & Events

Upcoming Professional Development

Welcome back to school, educators! We hope you were able to take some time to relax and reset this summer. AND we were also so pleased to have almost 200 participants in our PD workshops this summer -- including teachers, student support faculty, administrators and even students from across our schools. Highlights and resources from the summer workshops will be posted here in the coming days.

We also want to share some upcoming professional development opportunities.

1 — Social Studies Teacher Collaboration
Complete
Topic Survey by Wednesday September 21
We all know planning is much easier when you have other people to share resources with and bounce ideas off of. The Consortium wants to help Social Studies teachers connect with other teachers from across the city (and state!) who are working on teaching similar topics. This survey is designed to collect information about what Social Studies Teachers are planning for the school year. Obviously nothing is set in concrete. We are just trying to get an idea of what teachers are working on right now. This information will allow us to organize focused meetings and working groups so that teachers can share resources and work together to solve common problems.

Filling out this survey does not commit you to anything. Please do so if you may be interested in meeting Social Studies teachers working on similar and related topics. And please pass along to colleagues in your department who may not have received this email!

2 — 2022-2023 Math Exchange
Ongoing - express interest by emailing
jonathan@performanceassessment.org by Wednesday September 21
We are recruiting mathematics teachers and departments to be part of a Math Exchange beginning this fall. If you and your department are interested in thinking together with math teachers from other schools about the teaching and learning of mathematics through ongoing meetings & intervisitations, email Jonathan Katz at jonathan@performanceassessment.org to express interest. More specific details will follow.

3 — Animal Behavior Curriculum Collaboration
Ongoing - email
alana@lyonscommunityschool.org to get involved
Interested in teaching an Animal Behavior course or unit in Spring 2023 or beyond? Want to collaborate with colleagues across the Consortium with support and resources from the Wildlife Conservation Society and NYC's Zoos and Aquarium to build this curriculum? We are finalizing the plan for this work and will begin to meet soon. To be in the loop as the plan develops, email Alana Burgos (alana@lyonscommunityschool.org).

4— Meeting for Faculty New to the Consortium
Thursday October 6 3:30 - 5:00 PM
Julia Richman Educational Complex, 317 E 67th St Manhattan
RSVP to
ajrn@performanceassessment.org
Please pass this along to colleagues not yet on the listserv (and let them know they can subscribe here)! We will be holding an orientation to the Consortium's work for new faculty on Thursday, October 6 from 3:30-5 at JREC. This is an opportunity for both new and experienced teachers who are new to Consortium schools to understand our unique assessment system, the types of teaching and learning it is designed to enable, and the larger political context of our work. It's also an opportunity to ask questions, engage in discussion, and meet new colleagues. We hope to see you there. Please RSVP to ajrn@performanceassessment.org if you will be attending.

We look forward to our work together this year. Please reach out with any questions, suggestions or ideas!
