Lehman Alternative Community School - Spanish Teacher Position Opening - Fall 2025

From: April 2025 Until Filled

The Lehman Alternative Community School has a Spanish teacher vacancy for Fall 2025.  The Lehman Alternative Community School (LACS) is a unique 6-12 democratically run school, where all members of the school community (students, staff, and families) are involved in collective decision-making.  We value depth over breadth in our project-based curriculum.  Students demonstrate their reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills through engagement with learning activities and demonstrations for portfolios.  In place of letter grades, students demonstrate skill development in a portfolio, and both students and staff write narrative reflections/evaluations. Teachers build strong relationships with students through multiple roles, including facilitating a Family Group (advisory experience), project-based experiences, student governance committees, and trip experiences. Staff and students collaborate to make the collective community thrive. Teachers are expected to create academic and non-academic curricular experiences.

We are seeking a dynamic dual-certified language teacher who is passionate about their content, builds authentic relationships with students, and can engage middle and high school learners.  Multiple certifications are preferred but not required.  The candidate should have a strong commitment to identity-affirming curriculum where student voice is centered, celebrating diversity, and working to integrate voices from the cultures related to the language.

Required Qualifications:

  • The Ithaca City School District is committed to eliminating race, class, and disability as predictors of academic performance, co-curricular participation, and discipline. Qualified candidates will demonstrate a basic awareness of these commitments and a strong willingness to support these efforts.

  •  Possession of (or proof of eligibility for) New York State certification in Spanish 7-12 required. Candidates with dual language certification (French/Spanish) are preferred. This requires at least a Bachelor’s degree. Licensed teachers from other states may qualify for reciprocity.

Desired Characteristics:

  • An educational leader whose competency, energy, and commitment will help ensure that students thrive;

  • Proven ability to interact effectively with students and their families who represent cultures that   are diverse in terms of race, class, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and other characteristics to build an effective and collaborative school community;

  • Ability to implement culturally responsive curriculum, create an inclusive classroom, and differentiate instruction to engage the learning styles and needs of each student as an individual.

  • Salary Range: $53,291-$75,191 (10-month full-time base)

LACS is right for you if you are interested in being part of a community where:

  • We strive to teach in an inquiry-based manner with teacher-created curricula differentiated to provide our students with support and structures for this challenge.

  • Staff are reflective, internally motivated, working to continually improve their practice, with a particular focus on their own implicit biases.

  • Everyone is known, has a voice, and is seen first for their strengths, but valued for their complex selves.

  • We work to be anti-racist, pro-humanity and humanness,  teaching through an antiracist curriculum for understanding and skill building in content and experimental design.
