DESCRIPTION:

Leaders High School (www.leadersschool.net) is a small high school serving grades 9 – 12 in South Brooklyn. We work to cultivate a spirit of exploration, a commitment to social justice, and a supportive school community.

Through a partnership with New York City Outward Bound Schools and EL Education, we provide students with hands-on learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. We believe that education should be active, challenging, and meaningful, and our week-long intensives, held twice a year, let students and teachers dive deeply into subjects they are passionate about. Crew is a cornerstone of how we build a strong, supportive culture and community at Leaders. It consists of a group of students, with a teacher as their advisor, that stays together through all four years of high school. EL Education recognized Leaders with a national credential for exceeding the EL Education standards of student achievement, which measure three dimensions: academic performance, high-quality work, and positive character.

Another important part of our effort to build a strong community is our approach to discipline. As an alternative to suspensions, we challenge students to repair the harm that they have done to the community through a process known as Restorative Justice that consists of restorative circles, peer mediation, and peer mentorship.

Leaders is also a member of the New York Performance Standards Consortium, a group of schools that has been granted the right to use Performance-Based Assessment Tasks (PBATs) rather than the standardized testing system of the Regents Exams as part of our graduation requirements. Students present an independent, original research project in four content areas to a panel of teachers and experts in order to meet graduation requirements.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates must have New York State and New York City certification in the appropriate content area with effective or highly effective ratings. Please see the NYC Department of Education website for current hiring restrictions.
